Today, with the release of the TIMSS 2023 results, Albania for the first time scored above the international average in mathematics. According to this global assessment, Albania is one of 14 countries with improved mathematics scores and 15 countries with improved science scores.
Albania has made significant progress in TIMSS 2023, improving its performance in mathematics and science and, for the first time, scoring above the international average in mathematics. For the first time, this assessment, which included 200 schools and 5,143 fourth-grade students across the country, was administered digitally (CBA).
For the first time, Albania scored 512 points in mathematics, nine points above the international average of 503 points. Albanian students ranked 33rd out of 58 participating countries and economies, ahead of Canada, Spain, Belgium, France, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Kosovo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and others.
8% of Albanian students achieved advanced proficiency, exceeding the international average of 7%.
Of the 49 countries with results equivalent to TIMSS 2019, 14 improved in TIMSS 2023, 22 were unchanged, and 13 declined. Albania is one of the 14 countries that improved its mathematics scores. Albania was featured in the international results presentation as one of the countries with the largest score increase in mathematics, with an increase of 18 points.
In Science, Albania scored 491 points, an improvement of 2 points from 489 points in 2019, and only 3 points below the international average of 494 points. It is worth noting that Albania is ranked first in science, slightly below the international average.

Of the 49 countries with comparable TIMSS 2019 scores, 15 increased their TIMSS 2023 scores, 21 stayed the same, and 13 decreased. Albania is one of the 15 countries that improved its science scores.
The International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA) conducts TIMSS every four years. This international assessment is an important tool for assessing the quality of math and science education.
Albania participated in TIMSS for the first time in 2019, and its score improved significantly in the most recent assessment. These results demonstrate consistent growth and a commitment to improving the quality of education. The performance of Albanian students shows a clear path toward meeting the highest educational standards and a commitment to further expanding education at the international level.
